Garth Gundersen is in his fourteenth year as Director of Bands at Hendrickson High School in Pflugerville, Texas. Mr. Gundersen started the band in 2003 at the opening of the school. Under his direction, the Hendrickson High School Band has consistently earned Texas University Interscholastic League (UIL) Sweepstakes Awards and has been named Bands of America Regional Finalist multiple times. The Hendrickson High School Wind Ensemble was a Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Honor Band Finalist in 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2012. The Hendrickson High School Band has appeared in the UIL State Marching Contest four times, including top ten finishes in 2005, 2007, and 2009. In their first year in 6A, the Hawk Band advanced to the 6A UIL State Marching Contest in 2012.
The Hendrickson High School Wind Ensemble has been invited to perform in the 2015 Western International Band Clinic in Seattle, Washington. And, the Hendrickson High School Saxophone Ensemble will be performing in the 2015 Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, Illinois.
The Hendrickson High School Band has invitational performances at the ABC Boscov's Thanksgiving Day Parade in Philadelphia, the Magic Music Days Parade at Disney World, the Fiesta Bowl Parade in Phoenix, the McDonald's Thanksgiving Day Parade in Chicago, and has been invited to the 2016 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. At the Fiesta Bowl, the Hendrickson High School Band won the Grand Masters trophy for the outstanding field show and parade band in 2010.
Mr. Gundersen earned his Master's degree in Music Education and Conducting from The University of Texas at Austin where he studied with Jerry Junkin, Bob Duke, and Paula Crider. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from Louisiana State University, where he studied with Frank Wickes and was the drum major of the Golden Band from Tiger Land. Prior to becoming the band director at Hendrickson High School, Mr. Gundersen was an assistant at Westlake High School and became the first Band Director at W. Charles Akins High School in Austin.
Mr. Gundersen is a frequent adjudicator and clinician. He is a member of TMEA, Texas Bandmasters Association, Texas Music Adjudicators Association, and Pi Kappa Lambda. Mr. Gundersen resides in Cedar Park, Texas with his wife, Kim, and their boys, Aiden and Reese Gundersen.
